Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a term used to describe progressive lung diseases including chronic bronchitis, refractory (non-reversible) asthma, emphysema, and some forms of bronchiectasis. Since 2010 Speare Memorial Hospital’s Pulmonary Rehab program has been helping people with COPD, through a program of exercise, education and support, learn to breathe and function at the highest level possible.

Pulmonary Rehab PatientIs there a “typical” age for COPD?

The Mayo clinic states that most people are at least 35 to 40 years old when COPD first shows. In addition, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) reports that the disease develops most often in people who are 40 or older.

  • COPD is the 3rd leading cause of death in America
  • For 10 consecutive years women have outnumbered men in deaths attributed to COPD
  • Smoking is the primary risk factor for COPD
  • In an American Lung Association Survey of persons with COPD
    • 51% say that it limits their ability to work
    • 70% say it limits their normal physical exertion
    • 56% say it limits their ability to perform household chores
    • 53% say it limits their social activity
    • 50% say is limits sleep
    • 46% say it limits family activities

The Pulmonary Rehabilitation program at Speare has shown to improve the overall quality of life for persons with COPD.

What the Pulmonary Rehabilitation program at Speare offers

An individualized multidisciplinary program that follows the guidelines established by American Academy of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Our staff is dedicated to improving the lives of persons with chronic lung diseases by increasing strength, endurance, and managing symptom to maximize quality of life.

Criteria for Admission

  • Referral from Primary Care Provider or Specialist.
  • A Pulmonary Function test within the last year that meets  guidelines.
    • Medicare and many 3rd party insurance companies do cover Pulmonary Rehabilitation if specific requirements are met

Pulmonary Rehab classes are held Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons in the Cardiopulmonary Gym located on the first floor in the east wing of Speare Memorial Hospital. For more information visit our Pulmonary Rehab page or call 603-238-2288.
