New Art of Healing Exhibition Opens at SMH
Artists recognized for donations to hospital´s permanent collection

PLYMOUTH, N.H. --- The public corridors at Speare Memorial Hospital are once again showcasing the work of local artists with the installation of its second Art of Healing exhibition. Featuring the work of Jeanette Fournier, Marshall E. Nye, Jr., Conni Richardson and Cam Sinclair, the exhibition will run through January 4, 2008 and is accessible from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. daily from the Main Entrance Atrium.

"We had a tremendously positive response to our first exhibition from patients and families, as well as artists wanting to display their work," notes SMH´s Director of Development Susan Durgy. “To build on that momentum, we felt it important the next exhibition be up in time for the holidays, not to mention how bare the walls looked after the first exhibit came down."

Sale of Artwork Benefits SMH´s Campaign for Digital Mammography

The idea for using public corridors in the hospital as gallery space was to create a warm and welcoming environment following completion of the hospital´s renovation and expansion project. It has also been designed as a fundraiser for selected hospital programs and departments. For the coming year, the goal is to help raise the more than $400,000 needed to purchase digital mammography equipment. Digital mammography has been shown to improve earlier detection of breast cancer, particularly in younger women, and save lives.

All the art on exhibit at Speare Memorial Hospital will be for sale. Prospective buyers will need to contact the artists directly to make purchasing agreements, and artists will donate a portion of their sales back to Speare Memorial Hospital. However, all art will remain on display until the close of the exhibition in early January.

Artists Recognized for Donation of Artwork

As part of the opening reception for Art of Healing´s newest exhibition, three local artists were thanked for their generous donations to Speare Memorial Hospital´s permanent collection. Lusterware by Mary Bohn is displayed on the purple wall next to the main set of elevators on the first floor. November Woods was given by Cheryl Johnson and can be viewed in the Grady Conference Room. The Emergency Department waiting room showcases Promesse de Soleil (Sun Promise), a gift from Reine Fischler.
