SMH Nurses Cover Story for November Issue of Advance For Nurses

PLYMOUTH, N.H. --- "Small but Mighty" is the theme of the November 20 issue of Advance For Nurses cover story which spotlights the quality of care and leadership provided by nurses at Speare Memorial Hospital.

From emergency room care to oncology and the operating room, rural medicine is held to the same standards, protocols, and educational requirements of large, urban, research hospitals.  Making that point was the goal of Beverley Rankin, SMH’s chief nursing officer, in doing the article.  As quoted in the story, Rankin says, “We like to say we’re small but mighty.  Even though we’re small, we’re committed to staying current in our nursing practice.  We’re held to the same standards of nursing excellence as larger medical centers, but have fewer resources to achieve those standards.”

Advance For Nurses is a bi-weekly publication of Merion Publications, Inc., serving nurses in New England. The November 20 article talks about the differences and challenges of nursing in a small hospital, but also the similarities and advantages:  being part of the community, professional growth opportunities, continuing education and benchmarking best practices.  It also focuses on recent improvements to patient care following the completion of Speare Memorial Hospital’s recent $15 million expansion and renovation.

“We were originally contacted by a writer from Advance to participate in an article they were doing for their October issue about hospital improvement projects and their positive impact on nursing care,” notes Rankin.  “It was during that discussion that the idea for a larger article came about for showcasing Speare Memorial Hospital.  We were all very excited when we heard the editors of Advance wanted to pursue the story, and demonstrate how people and technology work together to deliver quality patient care with compassion and professionalism.”

Speare Memorial Hospital is a 24-hour, acute care, non-profit community hospital and health care provider serving Plymouth, and the communities of central New Hampshire, for more than a century.
