SMH to Host Free Diabetes Fair in Recognition of National Diabetes Month

PLYMOUTH, N.H. --- Raising awareness of the education and support resources available to patients diagnosed with diabetes and their families, as well as promoting the preventive and proactive measures patients can take in self-managing their diabetes, are the goals of a Diabetes Fair being hosted by Speare Memorial Hospital on Monday, November 20. The Diabetes Fair begins at 5:30 p.m. in the hospital cafeteria and is free and open to the public.

Professional medical representatives, informational booths, health screenings, and educational presentations have been scheduled for the SMH Diabetes Fair. Know You Diabetics Meds will be presented by Crystal Cascadden, registered pharmacist at Speare Memorial Hospital, at 6 p.m., and Blood Glucose Goals and Sick Day Rules will be presented by Liz Mills, RN, at 6:30 p.m. Informational booths and health screenings will include: nutrition and body fat percentages, foot checks, blood sugar screening and glucometer accuracy testing, exercise for diabetics, blood pressure screening, Anodyne Therapy Treatment Program and complimentary chair massages. Professional medical representatives from Abbott Diabetes Care, Eli Lilly and Company, Neighborhood Pharmacy, Novartis and Sanofi Aventis will also be on hand.

"We are thrilled with the number of service providers who have agreed to participate in our first Diabetes Fair," says SMH´s Certified Diabetes Educator Marie Veselsky, MAOE, RD, LD, facilitator of the hospital´s Diabetes Support Group. "As November is National Diabetes Month, we thought it important to get the information out to the public about the resources available to diabetics, and what proactive steps people who have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes can take to avoid fully developing type II diabetes.

Door prizes will be awarded and refreshments are being provided by Wal-Mart, Hannaford, professional medical representatives and Speare Memorial Hospital. The Diabetes Fair is being presented by the hospital´ Diabetes Support Group; a free program that meets the third Monday of every month. For more information contact Marie Veselsky at (603) 238-6472.
