SMH Presents My Child is Struggling in School: What Should I Do?
Information on strategies and resources available to parents to help their children succeed | |
| PLYMOUTH, N.H. --- Optimal growth and development is the goal of every parent for their child, and when children fall short of their potential it can be both concerning and confusing for the whole family. Helping parents understand there are resources available and how to access them is the focus of Speare Memorial Hospital´s next Health and Wellness program My Child is Struggling in School: What Should I Do?. The program is free and will begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 15 in the Community Room located in the basement of 20 Highland St., the Mid-State Health Building. | |
| According to Vincent Iannelli, M.D., F.A.A.P., president of Keep Kids Healthy, LLC (www.keepkidshealthly.com), "There are many reasons for (children) to underperform at school, including a lack of motivation . . .problems at home or with peers, poor work habits or study skills, emotional and behavior problems, learning disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder . . .and other medical problems including anxiety, depression or sleep problems." | |
| Dr. Viking Hedberg, M.D., M.P.H., and medical director for The Center for Adolescent Health in Plymouth, agrees, "Appropriate intervention needs good diagnosis. Our goal is to connect youth and families with the resources they need to achieve optimum health and performance. The program on November 15 is intended to be an interactive community user´s guide for parents on what to do and where to turn if their child is struggling in school." Dr. Hedberg specializes in pediatric medicine, is an assistant professor of pediatrics at Dartmouth Medical School, and has a special interest in adolescent health problems including eating disorders, attention and emotional disorders, and chronic illness psychopharmacology (use of medication). | |
| Also presenting at SMHÁs Health and Wellness program on November 15 will be Dr. Phil Sanguedolce, psychologist/coordinator of Health and Clinical Services at Plymouth Regional High School, and Maura Sullivan, Psy.D., Mid-State Health Psychology. Dr. Sanguedolce is a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist. He is an affiliate faculty member with the College of Graduate Studies at Plymouth State University and sees patients through his own private practice. | |
| Maura Sullivan has been recognized with a number of awards, presented a variety of professional workshops, including: Dealing with Difficult Families, Stress Management I & II, Anorexia and Bulimia: Healing self and helping others and Depression, SAD and Suicide: Detecting the signs in fellow students. She is a member of the New Hampshire Psychological Association and the American Psychological Association. | |
| Speare Memorial Hospital´s annual Health & Wellness Outreach Series offers free informational sessions addressing community needs with additional programs scheduled in March, April and May. They are: Steps to a Healthier You on March 21, 2007; Eldercare: 10 Most Difficult Conversations to Have With Your Parents on April 18; and Triple E, West Nile Virus and Lyme Disease: Understanding the Threats on May 16.
