Promoting an Active and Healthy Lifestyle for Children Topic of SMH´s Next Health & Wellness Presentation Award-Winning pediatrician to discuss Granite State FitKids™ program |
PLYMOUTH, N.H. --- Fostering an active and healthy lifestyle in children is as simple as 5-2-1-0: eat a least five servings of fruit and vegetables a day; cut screen time (TV and computer) to two hours or less a day; participate in one hour of activity a day; and restrict soda and sugar-sweetened sports drinks. The recommendations are the result of a multi-disciplinary panel of New Hampshire professionals with expertise in heath care, disease prevention and community health, and will be discussed at Speare Memorial Hospital´s next Health &Wellness presentation on Wednesday, October 17 at 7 p.m.
5-2-1-0: Promoting an Active & Healthy Lifestyle in Children will review the findings and recommendations from the Foundation for Healthy Communities 2006 report. Primarily aimed at preventing conditions in children associated with being overweight and obesity—including Type 2 Diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, asthma, depression and eating disorders—the goal is to provide families, pediatric primary care clinicians, schools, and community centers/parks and recreation departments the necessary tools and resources for success.
Demonstrating how ideas can become action will be presented by Dr. Charles Cappetta, a member of the NH Childhood Obesity Expert Panel, based on his award-winning school wellness program Granite State FitKids™. Named the 2004 Pediatrician of the Year, the Nashua-based pediatrician developed the seven-week interactive health program for fourth graders in 1997. Over the last decade the program as grown and annually reaches more than 2100 students in the greater Nashua area. "Dr. Chuck" as he is fondly known, will share his experience on how to engage children in pursing a healthy lifestyle.
SMH´s annual Health & Wellness series covers a wide range of topics of interest. All presentations are free and held at 20 Highland St, Citizen´s Bank, in Plymouth, unless otherwise noted. Other programs scheduled for the 2007 – 2008 season are:
