Eldercare Focus of SMH´s Next Health & Wellness Presentation

PLYMOUTH, N.H. --- Taking care of mom and dad. For 19 million Americans, in addition to jobs and raising their own children, taking care of aging parents has become part of the daily routine. According to U.S. News & World Report, the struggle is to find the right balance between getting parents the assistance they need with the independence they desire.

Eldercare: 10 Most Difficult Conversations to Have with Your Parents is the next installment in Speare Memorial Hospital´s Health & Wellness Outreach Series. The program is free and will be held in the Community Room at 20 Highland St., the Citizen´s Bank Building, and begins at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18.

Nancy Euchner, RN, is the founder of AgeQuest, LLC, located in Portsmouth, and has more than 25 years experience in long-term care planning. Her presentation will focus in on the key issues people need to consider as they begin planning discussions with their parents, as well as available resources and support for care givers.

"The truth is that we're rarely prepared in advance for the demands of this kind of caring," notes Euchner. "In addition to the time and distance issues that many of us face, there is the challenge of just figuring out the plan. What is the impact of illness or change? What are the needs most likely to be this week, next month and next year? What resources are available to help, and how are they best managed?" Euchner founded her company to answer these and other questions, and to "coach" elders and care givers through the process.

Speare Memorial Hospital´s annual Health & Wellness Outreach Series offers free informational sessions addressing community needs with an additional program scheduled for May 16: Triple E, West Nile Virus and Lyme Disease: Understanding the Threats.
