SMH´s Spring Art of Healing Exhibition Installed

PLYMOUTH, N.H. --- Speare Memorial Hospital’s spring Art of Healing exhibition once again has the hospital’s public corridors showcasing local artists. Featuring the work of Sky Emmons-Shaw, Stephen Hodecker and Judy Palfrey, the exhibition will run through April 11 and is accessible from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. daily from the Main Entrance Atrium.

"This exhibit features the work of a relative new comer, as well as established well-known artists, all of who have been acclaimed for their work," notes SMH´s Director of Development Susan Durgy. “We continue to be pleased by the interest of local artists wanting to display their work, and the ability to provide patients, their families and visitors a warm, soothing environment for quiet reflection."
Art of Healing Exhibition

A classical figure style best describes the work of Stephen Hodecker who resides in Meredith. He has painted the landscape across the country and abroad, but his primary subject matter is rural New Hampshire and the coast of Maine. The American flag and its relationship to our culture, central to Hodecker´s Remembrance series, continues to emerge as a theme in recent works—some of which are included in the current exhibition.

Judy Palfrey´s murals and paintings of landscapes and flowers reflect her love of nature. Growing up in Castle Rock, Pa., where she explored the woods, hills and fields around her home served as foundational inspiration. She exhibits at the MAA Gallery in Manchester and has received numerous honors for her work including "]Woman of Achievement for 2007" by the Franklin BPW. Currently she resides in Webster Lake.

Introduced to the world of fine art through photography, Sky Emmons-Shaw of Bridgewater moved to painting after reading about Picasso and the abstract expressionists. No longer limited to actual events that took place in front of a camera lens, Emmons-Shaw immersed himself into painting. His inspirations come from childhood memories, places he has been and events he has witnessed. All are launching pads for many of his compositions.

Sale of Artwork Benefits SMH´s Campaign for Digital Mammography

The idea for using public corridors in the hospital as gallery space was to create a warm and welcoming environment following completion of the hospital´s renovation and expansion project. It has also been designed as a fundraiser for selected hospital programs and departments. The goal is to help raise the more than $400,000 needed to purchase digital mammography equipment. Digital mammography has been shown to improve earlier detection of breast cancer, particularly in younger women, and save lives.

All the art on exhibit at Speare Memorial Hospital is for sale. Prospective buyers will need to contact the artists directly to make purchasing agreements, and artists will donate a portion of their sales back to Speare Memorial Hospital. However, all art will remain on display until the close of the exhibition in April.
