SMH Announces a Spring Weight Loss Challenge
|
PLYMOUTH, NH---- Need a little help adopting a healthy life style? For the Health of It is a 10 week weight loss challenge being offered by Speare Memorial Hospital beginning Monday, March 24.
Open to anyone 18 years or older, all participants will be asked to sign a medical liability waiver at the initial weigh-in on March 24. The winner of the weight loss challenge will be announced on Monday, June 2 and awarded to the person who has the highest weight loss percentage. The winner will receive a $200 gift certificate to Wolfsons´s Jewelers, a complete make over that includes full body massage by Right Touch, hair cut and color by Britta´s Hair Studio and a one month local gym membership, or six month membership to Plymouth Jazzercise Fitness Center. Prizes will also be given to the second, third and fourth place winners. The goal of the For the Health of It spring weight loss challenge is help individuals find the motivation for living a healthier lifestyle.
"We want to promote weight loss for the health aspect, not for the looks" notes Marie Veselsky, MAOE, RD, LD, CDE, Speare Memorial Hospital´s registered dietitian. For the Health of It is being offered in conjunction with Speare Memorial Hospital´s weight loss support group that meets every Monday of each week (Tuesday after a Monday holiday) at 5 p.m. in the SMH cafeteria. The support group will offer advice on a weight loss meal plan, behavioral modification, exercise and most importantly, motivation and encouragement.
Veselsky says SMH is committed to running a successful campaign to help in the fight against obesity and unhealthy lifestyles. The combination of abdominal obesity, high cholesterol, elevated blood pressure, glucose intolerance and physical inactivity is often referred to as metabolic syndrome. It is estimated that over 50 million people in the United States have this condition. People with metabolic syndrome are at increased risk for developing more serious chronic illnesses such as, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Weight loss can help significantly reduce risk factors.
