Plymouth Area Businesses Planning to Paint the Town Red with SMH

PLYMOUTH, N.H. --- Eleven area businesses, have committed to promoting and asking their employees to wear red to work tomorrow, Friday, February 2, in support of Speare Memorial Hospital’s goal to Paint the Town Red in recognition of the American Heart Association’s “National Wear Red Day.”

“We are so pleased with community interest and planned participation,” states Michele Barney Hutchins, SMH’s director of community relations.  “The participating businesses employ approximately 1,500 people, so there is the potential for seeing a lot of red tomorrow.”

Area businesses slated to participate by wearing red are: New Hampshire Electric Co-op, Plymouth State University, Community Guaranty Savings Bank, Northway Financial, Campton Elementary School, Holderness Central School, Plymouth Elementary School, Plymouth Chamber of Commerce, Town of Plymouth, Woodlands Credit Union and Bridgewater Power Company.

"This is the first time we´ve worked to expand our outreach and education about a particular awareness day outside of the hospital, and based on the response, I think we´ll succeed in exposing a greater number of people to the importance of heart health," says Hutchins. She explains the reason for reaching out to the business community is four of the 10 most costly health conditions to employers are all related to heart health: high blood pressure, heart attacks, diabetes and chest pain. To help further educate people about heart health, SMH provided participating businesses bookmarks to distribute to their employees with "Tips for Building a Better Heart." (Editor´s note: list of tips included below.)

Tomorrow´s "National Wear Red Day" is the kick off to Speare Memorial´s month-long focus on heart health, which will culminate with a Paint the Town Red reception at the Hospital on Friday, February 23 at 5:30 p.m. The community celebration will continue the outreach efforts and provide information on the continuum of cardiac care available at Speare Memorial Hospital. Jazz music, a wine tasting, dark chocolate, heart healthy hors d´ oeuvres and non-alcoholic pomegranate mimosas will all be part of the celebration to raise funds to purchase a new BioStep® Semi-Recumbent Elliptical machine for SMH´s Cardiac Rehabilitation program.

The cost is $10 per person and tickets are available by calling (603) 238-2211, or at Chase Street Market and Dressers Unlimited in Plymouth. Sponsors of the event include Chase Street Market, Family Tree Florist, Wolfson Jewelers and Lindt Chocolate.

Tips for Building a Better Heart
  • Know Your Numbers. Maintain a healthy weight and control your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar.
  • "Butt" Out! If you smoke, now is the time to quit.
  • Move It! Get at least 30 minutes of exercise every day to maintain a healthy heart. More physical activity will be needed if you are trying to lose weight.
  • Eat Smart. Whole grains, fruits and vegetables provide a solid foundation for a healthy diet.
  • Chill Out! Take time to relax, refresh and rejuvenate to better manage stress. Get at least eight hours of sleep a day.
  • Check Up. If you haven´t had a physical recently, call your primary care physician to schedule one. Request and discuss your cardiac risk assessment.
