Sharon Smith of Plymouth first met Dr. Giovan after her 91-year-old mother fractured her shoulder. She distinctly recalls his interactions with her, and how well Dr. Giovan calmed her mother’s fear and anxiety, even commenting they shared the same birthday.
“As a nurse that is very important to me,” says Sharon, “how a doctor relates to patients as people, not an illness.”
Sharon next met Dr. Giovan following her own injury. She explains, “I was out walking my dogs in the woods. There was no snow or ice and the dogs were off leash when a slipped on a small muddy hill. I heard the bones in my wrist break, so I knew I would need surgery. I came to Speare because it is the best hospital and I wanted Dr. Giovan to do the surgery because of how he had interacted with my mother.”
“Dr. Giovan took very good care of me and I’m extremely impressed with Speare Memorial Hospital,” Sharon continues. “I received excellent care while in the hospital, and as a RN, I’ve worked in hospitals all over the country and never seen any better quality of care than I’ve witnessed here at Speare.”
Sharon says she had a good recovery and is back to doing all the things she did before. This past winter she was out cross country skiing with a friend. Near the end of the ski day her friend fell and fractured her shoulder. Having recently moved to the Plymouth area from Boston, her friend didn’t know a lot of people, let alone doctors. Sharon says, “She was frightened and I wanted to reassure her she was in good hands with Dr. Giovan and Speare Memorial Hospital.”
