Community Programs

Speare Memorial Hospital offers a wide variety of educational programs, support groups for those dealing with specific issues, as well as classes to enhance your health and wellness. We will continue to offer programs and services that our community wants and needs.

Alzheimer's Support

Educational information and continuing mutual support for caregivers of Alzheimer's Disease patients. Respite care will be provided for Alzheimer's patients while their caregivers participate in this important self-help program. The group meets the 3rd Thursday of each month; 1-2pm; Social Services Conference Room.

Bereavement Support

At some point all of us will experience the loss of a loved one. Until that event occurs it is difficult to understand the impact and change that grief will impose on ones life. SMH seeks to create a community of support for individuals dealing with issues of loss and grief.

Compassionate Friends

The Compassionate Friends assists families in the positive resolution of their grief following the death of a child, sibling, grandchild or stepchild. CF also provides education and information about parental and sibling grief to families, professionals and the community.

Survivors of Suicide Loss

Support group for those grieving the loss of someone to suicide.

Diabetes Support Group

Helping people with diabetes make necessary lifestyle changes and learn how to successfully manage their own diabetes. Led by Certified Diabetes Instructor Marie Veselsky.

Weight Loss Support Group
Open to all individuals who want to practice healthy lifestyle habits in an effort to prevent weight problems. Led by Marie Veselsky, MAE, RD, LD, CNSD, a registered dietitian at Speare Memorial Hospital.

Meets: Every Monday
Weigh-in: 5 - 5:30 p.m.
Program: 5:30 - 6 p.m.

Look Good . . .Feel Better

Cancer can rob a woman of her energy, appetitie and strength, but it doesn't have to take away her self-confidence. This free program teaches beauty techniques to women in active cancer treatment to help combat the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment.

CaRE Program - Cancer and Recovery Exercise

A supervised exercise program for patients undergoing chemotherapy/radiation treatment, or recovering from cancer. The CaRE program meets in a group exercise setting supervised by a Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist and an Oncology Registered Nurse. Individual goals are set and exercise tailored to the needs of each participant.

Fee: $30.00 per month
Meets: Tuesday and Thursday
Time: 9:00 to 10:00 am

Healthy Pregnancy and Delivery

Here at Speare Memorial Hospital, the nurses on the Labor and Delivery Unit have many things to offer our families in our community. The nursing staff on the Labor and Delivery unit is here 24 hours a day to answer any questions and try to help you solve any of your newborn problems.

Living Wills/Advance Medical Directives

An Advance Directive is a Living Will or a Durable Power of Attorney for health care that allows you to give directions about your future medical care. Advance Directives can protect your rights if you become unable to communicate your wishes due to illness or injury. All participants must bring a photo I.D.

Prescription Assistance Program

If you or a family member cannot afford to purchase needed prescription medications our Prescription Assistance Program can help. In most cases, if your household income is below $23,880, have no other outside help for prescription medications and you are a patient of an affiliated physician, you may qualify for free medications. Please see your medical provider for a referral form.

School Dental Program

Speare's School Dental Program, now in its 5th year, continues to offer preventative and restorative dental services to over 3,000 children, from pre-school to high school, who may otherwise go untreated. The program includes dental screenings, classroom oral health education, dental cleanings, a weekly fluoride rinse program, and case management and referrals for restorative care.
